Biographical/Historical note

Mr. Thompson, noted Detroit African-American banker and businessman was born in Montgomery, Alabama, on February 1, 1899. In 1906, the family moved to Detroit. He opened the first African-American accounting office in Detroit in 1937; this continued to 1963. After World War II, Mr. Thompson organized the Home Federal Savings and Loan, becoming its secretary and manager until 1954. He was president of the American Savings and Loan League, 1952-1953. In 1955, he became a realtor and in 1965 incorporated the Thompson Mortgage Company. After the 1967 Detroit riot, Mt. Thompson organized the African-American stock corporation, Our Supermarket, Inc. Mr. Thompson and his mother were founders of the Plymouth Congregational Church, 1920; a charter member and first president of Alpha Phi Alpha at Wayne State University, 1926-1927; president of the Booker T. Washington Trade Association, 1949-1950; and organizer and honorary member of the Cotillion Club; a life member of NAACP; a trustee of the Phyllis Wheatley Home for the Aged. (from MS/Thompson, M.
